ILSAC ENGINE SERVICE
Founded in 1992, the International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) is an organization through which Ford, General Motors, Chrysler and the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Inc. (JAMA) develop minimum performance standards for passenger car engine oils used in gasoline fuelled engines.
The ILSAC standards, denoted by the terminology ILSAC GF-x, are based upon the API service categories and bring additional performance requirements, for example fuel economy improvement, and restrictions in the viscosity grades that may claim to meet an ILSAC standard includes the major automobile manufacturers that manufacture vehicles in the USA. Effectively, ILSAC specifications are the fuel economy version of the API specifications.
GF-1 is obsolete
GF-2 is equivalent to API SJ
GF-3 is equivalent to API SL
GF-4 is equivalent to API SM
GF-5 is equivalent to API SN
GF-6 is equivalent to API SN Plus
ILSAC, API and ACEA specifications require a large range of engine tests and laboratory tests on the oil. Parameters such as high and low temperature wear, oxidation, soot control, oil thickening, deposit control, volatility, stay in grade performance, fuel economy, chemical composition and many others are tested.
