SAE for Engine oil

LUBRICANT CLASSIFICATION (Viscosity - Part 1)

SAE Classification for Engine oil

SAE International, formerly named the Society of Automotive Engineers, and SAE J300 is a standard that defines the viscometric properties of mono- and multi-grade engine oils, maintained by SAE International. Key parameters for engine oil viscometric are the oil's kinematic viscosity, its high temperature-high shear viscosity (HTHS), and low-temperature properties (CCS).

Multi-grade oils must fulfill two viscosity specifications, their viscosity grade consists of two numbers, e.g. 10W-40: 10W refers to the low-temperature viscosity ("winter"), 40 refers to the high-temperature viscosity ("summer").

Tribology
Tribology comprises the fields of friction, wear and lubrication. It aims at the functional, economical and ecological optimization of motion systems.
